How to Get a Divorce

WHAT IS THE FIRST DOCUMENT YOU NEED TO FILL OUT?

Many people ask the question, “where do I start when I want to get a divorce?” the answer generally is you need to file a Petition for Dissolution, which in layman’s terms translates to, “I am Requesting A Divorce.”

The Petition for Dissolution will ask you a number of questions on it like:

  1. What year and date did you get married?
  2. What year and date did you separate?
  3. Do you have children?
  4. Do you have assets?
  5. Do you have assets that belong to you and should not be shared with your spouse?
  6. What do you think child custody should be like?
  7. And more.

PLEASE NOTE:

The Petition can be found online or at your local courthouse, along with the other local papers, you will need to fill out! Before filling a Petition out you should suggest paying for an hour of an attorney’s time, or seeking help at a low-income self-help center if you qualify. Remember, anything you fill out and submit to the court is a binding legal document so you want to be sure, YOU GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. Otherwise, it will cost you a lot and legal fees and court fees if you change your stance on the case halfway through the matter.
